When it comes to pumping operations, well testing is critical for everything to go smoothly. It is normal to spend a lot of time around the lease taking on different tests. Oil, as well as other products that are well-related, must get tested before being sold. A facilities team does this to ensure the effectiveness of elements such as chemical treatment. There might also be a need for other tests, including the valves, meters, and other equipment pertaining to the lease.
What About the Well?
The well itself also must get tested, both when brought to production and regularly throughout its lifespan. Accurate testing is necessary to get competent readings of results so that it can improve efficiency while bringing vital information for operations management. Every test gets used for specific purposes, so it is paramount that you understand how every aspect works and what is being tested.
Facilities Prepping Before Well Testing
Prior to testing, wells must get prepared. Preparation includes putting the well into the correct state. In some instances, there need to be 24 hours of normal operation before testing takes place. Other tests call for the well to go into full shutdown prior to testing so that pressure can build up.
What is Normalizing?
Well normalizing means operation and production in a standard manner for that particular well, where it will be doing so for a minimum of 24 hours. When tests require this form of preparation, you will measure well performance on a daily basis.
You may have some cases where production gets measured after the well builds additional pressure. With these tests, the facilities team may suggest that the well gets shut-in for a period of time. This is the process of well isolation where the casing and master valves must be closed, so nothing gets produced from the well. Any other lines leading to the well, such as a chemical injector, must be closed off at a valve.
